I have always been interested in film. From how they are created, the history of film, and the emotions they are able to invoke. I have always had an interest in film. It was not until my freshman year of high school I was actually able to learn more about film. It was also at that time I was given the opportunity to create films. I have always been fascinated by art, however, I was never skilled at painting, drawing, crafting, etc. Creating films gave me a chance to express myself artistically. This is why I believe I continued creating films through high school. I found it to be fun and challenging. Through film, I found a creative outlet that I would have never discovered if I was never given the opportunity to create films.
This year I wanted to focus on the theme of the representation of everyday life. I choose this theme because I feel it suits my style of filming the best. This theme also allowed me to play around with different ideas. I created three projects this year that represent that theme in different ways. Each project has its own unique way of representing life.
My first film “Monkey Business” was a film that was born from a joke. My friend and I were discussing ideas for films when we both decided to create a film about a monkey. Through there I was able to build off of that idea and create a story about a monkey who must escape the repetitiveness of life. The film stars the main protagonist Maurice. Maurice is a monkey who works a corporate job that he does not enjoy. Throughout this Maurice grows increasingly frustrated about his life. This causes him to break down and leave everything behind. This film was a commentary on the importance of balancing work and life.
My second film “132” is a documentary about a high school student-athlete. I was able to film Jaciah Whitcombs wrestling season. At the beginning of the season, he suffered an injury and the documentary shows the struggle of dealing with an injury during the season. I was also able to capture his return, so the audience is able to see the hard work he has put in this season. The film shines a light on student-athletes. Through that film, I was able to show the determination and resilience that student-athletes have. I was also able to showcase both the physical and mental toughness that is required to juggle sports and school.
My third film “The Boys Make Carbonara” is more of a vlog-style film. The film follows a group of friends faced with the task of cooking. The film shows the process of cooking a carbonara and a group of friends having a good time. The film focuses on small moments that friends are able to enjoy. Even just cooking with friends can create memories that a person will hold onto. The film shows the importance of those memories and experiences.
The three films I created are not perfect and I wish they would have turned out exactly how I envisioned them. With that being said there is a part of me proud of what I was able to accomplish. I wanted to show different perspectives on everyday life because everyone's lives are different. I hope those who watch my films are able to appreciate them in some way. In the end, I hope my films are able to invoke some emotion. `
