Blog Investigation and Work Log 11/21

Work log- I looked for music and sound effects that I can incorporate in my film.

I did research on the other three types of documentaries for my investigation.

Preformative-

Performative documentaries focus on the filmmaker's personal experiences with a subject. The incorporation of the filmmakers' personal experience allows the audience to see a more emotional connection with the subject.

Example- Icarus is a documentary dealing with the subject of doping in the sports world. Bryan Fogel documents his journey using performance-enhancing drugs while also uncovering the mystery behind the doping scandal during the 2008 Olympics. Fogel uses his experiences to help the audience better understand the situation.

Reflexive-

Reflexive documentaries incorporate the filmmaker in the film. This style of documentary focuses on the relationship between the filmmaker and the audience. The goal is to have the audience connect to the film.

Example- "Yes Theory" is a youtube channel dedicated to creating documentaries on a variety of different subjects. Their main goal is to try new things around the world and be spontaneous. They document their spontaneous experiences and use their videos to connect with their viewers.

Expository-

Expository documentaries focus on being informative and persuasive. The goal of an expository documentary is to inform and promote a specific viewpoint. A common characteristic is the filmmaker will narrate the film to discuss the subject.

Example- Planet Earth is a documentary about the different wildlife around the world. The filmmakers use cinematic shots of wildlife to engage the viewer visually, while a narrator informs the viewer about the specific animal. The message behind the documentary is to promote environmentalism. This message is conveyed by the visual elements and narration in the film.
