Independent Blog Post 2/27

For my next film, I want to incorporate tropes from old mafia films. In certain scenes, I want to recreate the costuming, cinematography, and music of old gangster films. In this investigation, I wanted to learn more about what makes a mafia movie to better understand how I can incorporate it into my film.

Costuming-

The costumes I would use in my film would be inspired by films like "Goodfellas" and "The Godfather". The stylish suits that were worn in those movies are something I want to use. The suits are an iconic trope. Using suits as a costume will help the audience understand that my film is referencing mafia movies.

Cinematography and music-

Mafia films tend to have a darker look while using soft lighting. The darker look would work to create a serious tone for mafia films. Mafia films also utilized framing and slow/smooth camera movements. Music is another important factor. Most mafia films feature classical music and some feature soft jazz. Finding the right music will also help when recreating scenes.
