Layering Blog

What have you learned about layering?

Before learning about layering I just thought it was a tactic used by artists to add a visual element to their work. When our class took an in-depth look at layering I have now learned that the purpose of layering is to represent the complexity of the unconscious mind. In addition, layering can be used to make a statement on social or political issues that the artist feels are important. Shahzia Sikander and Julie Mehretu would be examples of artists who have made a statement on political issues using layering.

How do contemporary artists use the concept of layering in their artwork?

As mentioned before many artists use layering to make statements on political/social issues occurring in the world. Shahzia Sikander is a Pakistani-American artist who uses layering in her work. Sikander utilizes elements from traditional middle eastern art and adds modern elements. An example of this would be one of her paintings which includes middle eastern women wearing traditional clothing accompanied by a fighter jet in the background. The purpose of including the jet was to make a statement on the US military's involvement in the middle east. Takashi Murakami is another artist who uses layering in his work. Murakami's art usually includes the iconic "Murakami Flower". The meaning of flower can stem from
Murakami's thoughts on commercialism, to the effect, that the
atomic bombs had on Japan's culture, and even just basic human emotion. His style of art and use of layering is how Murakami is able to draw out certain emotions and convey these themes.

How might you be able to use layering in your own art?

For my project, I plan to make a documentary and I may be able to incorporate layering. I am thinking of layering a shot of my subject from earlier in the season over a shot of the subject later in the season. The shot will represent growth throughout the season both physical and mental. The shot could be used as a transition into the climax of the film.

Is there something that you found in your investigation that specifically interested or inspired you?

Murakami's art style is something that I really found interesting. From his characters to his use of certain techniques, and his style of drawing. I found his work to be really unique and something that I enjoy analyzing. Especially his paintings that incorporate layering. There is so much to take in and analyze. Even though, there is a lot going on in the paintings. I feel they are still visually pleasing because of the colors and shapes he uses. I respect and enjoy his work.
